FERTILIZER
IMPROVING AGRICULTURE, NURTURING LIVES
FERTILIZER
Fertiliser has been around in one form or the other since the days of the early man since it is an integral part of agriculture. The first fertiliser, produced by chemical processes, was made in the early 19th century. Being a crucial agricultural commodity, it facilitates the mass production of food for the global population growing rapidly. Over the years, it has enabled us to accelerate yields to serve the hungry. Today, the credit for around 50% of the global food goes to this crucial commodity.
UREA
Urea, is an organic compound widely used in fertilisers as a nitrogen source (N) and an essential raw material for the chemical industry. Also known as carbamide, it is a colourless, odourless solid, highly soluble in water, and practically non-toxic.
Almost 90% of urea produced in the world is used as a nitrogen-release fertiliser, since it has the highest nitrogen content in comparison to other commonly used fertilisers.

The other uses of urea are:
  1. in the manufacturing of resins and resins and the urea-melamine-formaldehyde used in marine plywood.
  2. production of explosives
  3. it serves as raw material for the pharmaceuticals sector
These are some of the many applications of this essential commodity.
POTASH
Potassium compounds and potassium-bearing materials are commonly referred to as potash. The name originated from the Dutch word ‘potaschen’, which stands for pot ashes, as during those days, potash was extracted by soaking plant ashes or wood ash in water in pots. A valuable commodity for the agricultural sector, potash improves water retention, yield, nutrient value, taste, colour, texture and disease resistance of food crops. It is the third primary plant and crop nutrient after nitrogen and phosphorus.
