WHEAT
Wheat is a grass widely cultivated for its seed, a cereal grain that is a staple food around the world. Wheat is grown on a larger area of land than any other food crop (220.7 million hectares or 545 million acres in 2021). World trade in wheat is greater than for all other crops combined. In 2021, world wheat production was 771 million tonnes (850 million short tons), making it the second most-produced cereal after maize (known as corn in North America and Australia; wheat is often called corn in countries including Britain). Since 1960, world production of wheat and other grain crops has tripled and is expected to grow further through the middle of the 21st century. Global demand for wheat is increasing because of the usefulness of gluten to the food industry.
CORN
The history of modern-day corn dates back to about 10,000 years ago; it originated in Central America and was grown in Southern Mexico. In 1492, it was discovered in Cuba by Christopher Columbus. It eventually spread to Europe and then to the rest of the world. Now, corn is a ubiquitous crop, from some of the driest arid regions to some of the wettest subtropics. Its versatility accounts for its popularity. Beyond corn being savoured in a salad or enjoyed as popcorn, it has multiple uses. Its consumption by humans makes for a relatively insignificant share. In fact, most of it is used in ethanol fuel or as livestock feed. It is essential for a diverse range of sectors. In the oil and gas industry, it forms a critical component in ethanol production, which is an ingredient in gasoline. A considerable amount of global corn production is used as livestock feed. Besides, it is significantly used as the raw material for corn-based plastics, an environmentally friendly and cheaper alternative. The high-fructose corn syrup has its usage in confectionery items as a sweetener.
